History of Pop Music

Genre originates from Rock'n'Roll music from the 1950s. From the late 1950's pop music meaning from non-classical music. This genre of music accounts for most of the top chart listings. Songs from this genre can vary in influence; jazz, country, hip-hop, etc. However, the most widely and accepted definition of pop music is marketable and memorable. Think Taylor Swift, the Beatles, Pat Benetar. The songs are quick and people are quickly able to remember and recall the lyrics and melody. The genre is also highlighted by group performances. For example, the term "boy bands," groups like the Beatles, Jackson Five, the Backstreet Boys, and One Direction; have populated the genre. As well as "girl groups," groups like Destiny's Child, the Spice Girls, and the Chordettes. This genre is wonderful because of its spirit of collaboration as well as the ability to be inspired by various other musical genres.
